Neck lift surgery corrects the signs of aging in the neck and the jawline. It often accompanies face lift surgery for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Over time, the neck begins to age, resulting in sagging fat pockets from the jowls and nasolabial folds and banding from the plastyma muscle in the neck.
The most severe form of aging in the neck causes a “turkey neck” appearance that creates an artificially aged appearance. A neck lift involves tightening the vertical bands in the neck in order to create a more defined jaw and chin.
The benefits of neck lift surgery include:
- Removal of loose, sagging skin from under the chin
- Correcting vertical bands in the neck
- Eliminating area of fat from under the chin (double chin) and on the neck
- Restoring a smooth, youthful looking neck
Candidates for a neck lift are healthy men and women with reasonable expectations for improving an aging neck. Individuals with sagging skin and vertical bands in the neck are ideal candidates. If there is excess fat, the patient may be a candidate for liposuction as well. If the patient has jowling and is seeking a more defined jawline, a facelift may be effective also.
A small, well-hidden incision is made either behind the ear, underneath the chin, or both. Dr. Miller will discuss the most effective options for your individual needs. The platysma muscle is identified and the edges of the muscle are sutured together creating a tightening effect. Excess skin behind the ear is removed and the soft tissue is secured in a more youthful, natural position. The procedure takes 1-2 hours depending on the patient’s rejuvenation needs.
A neck lift typically is done under local anesthetic in our procedure suite but can also be done under IV sedation or, at the patient’s request, under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery center.
Most patients can return to work within 5-7 days. The majority of visible swelling and bruising are resolved within one week. A compression garment is worn around the neck around the clock for the first three days and then at night for 10 days. The patient may initially feel stiffness in the neck and soreness. The patient goes home after the procedure and is evaluated on post-operative day one and again on day seven for removal of sutures.
Additional Neck and Facial Rejuvenation Procedures
A neck lift is frequently performed in combination with other procedures in order to meet the rejuvenation needs of the patient. The most common procedures include
Liposuction is commonly used in facial and neck rejuvenation and is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. It can be done as an isolated procedure in order to sculpt the contours of the neck and face, or it can be done in combination with a number of surgical procedures. Liposuction, also known as liposculpting, is a safe and effective way to contour the jawline, jowls, and the area underneath the chin known as the submental region.
Ideal candidates are physically fit and have a healthy lifestyle. They often have persistent fatty deposits in the neck and jowls despite diet and exercise. Many patients complain they feel like they have a double chin. These fatty deposits often create a disproportional look to the neck and face.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes to one hour, longer if combined with other procedures. A tiny, well-hidden incision is made below the chin and then a suction cannula gently removes the fat from the affected areas.
Anesthesia can be provided with tumescent anesthetic technique, or the standard local anesthetic technique.
Recovery time depends on the combination of procedures chosen. If neck liposuction is done as an isolated procedure, recovery will take between 3-5 days. The majority of visible swelling and bruising should resolve within 1 week. Patients should anticipate about 3 days off of work. A compression garment is worn after the procedure. Final cosmetic results can take up to 2 months.
Liposuction of the neck is frequently combined with a neck lift in order to enhance tightening of the neck. It is also frequently combined with a facelift in order to address jowling concerns. Other complementary procedures include…
