1. Botox is going to change the way I look and make me look fake.
I’m sure a few celebrities stand out in your mind when you think of the “overdone” look, but that unnatural look does not stem from Botox. Usually when a person looks fake it’s because they’ve had other types of treatments that weren’t properly executed such as a bad facelift or too much filler. Another common misconception is that everything done to the face is “Botox”. What Botox accomplishes is very specific- it relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. It doesn’t add volume or make your skin look plastic or anything either than it stops you from making big expressions that cause your skin to wrinkle. Which by the way, Botox isn’t the only product that achieves this- Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau have very similar effects. When these products are applied by a qualified professional with proven experience, the result are a smoother, younger looking complexion.
2. It is only for people over 50.
We beg you, do not wait until your 50 to get Botox. Even waiting until your 40 is pushing it. The reason being that Botox and other neuromodulators that we mentioned above are preventative and prevention is a lot easier to achieve than reversal. Think of it this way- your skin loses elasticity as you get older, but if you inhibit your face from frowning, then it’s unlikely you would develop a frown line. We are seeing more and more patients in their 20’s coming in for neuromodulator treatments and frankly we aren’t opposed to it. Those patients (if they stay out of the sun too) will age the most gracefully and be the most unlikely to undergo any extreme surgeries or a facelift later in life.
3. Only women get Botox.
Please! Botox is for anyone who wants to prevent or smooth wrinkles. The stigma surrounding Botox is becoming obsolete and so is the idea that Botox is just for women. The scariest part for men is probably walking in the door for the first time and expecting some girlie beauty parlor. But DermFx makes the gentlemen feel as comfortable as possible and the appointment time is 15 minutes or less, making the transaction very seamless and quick.
4. Botox is harmful because it is a toxin.
Botox is totally harmless so don’t let the ingredient in Botox called Botulinum toxin type A confuse you with Botulism. Botulinum Toxin type A has been used in medicine for more than 20 years in different specialties from ophthalmology to dermatology and neurology. Of course with any medication there is a chance for adverse reactions in some patients, so it is important to read through the box warning label and the consent form before being treated.
According to a Healthline article, although botulinum toxin in extreme doses is life-threatening, small doses — such as those used in the application of Botox — are considered very safe. In fact, only 36 cases of adverse effects associated with cosmetic use were reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 1989 and 2003. Thirteen of these cases may have had more to do with an underlying condition than with the drug itself.
5. If I stop getting Botox I’m going to look even older or worse than I did before.
Botox is a muscle relaxant that helps delay the progression of skin aging. For this reason, it is impossible that when the effect wears off at 3-6 months the wrinkles will be more pronounced. In fact, it produces the opposite effect, Botox reduces the deepening of wrinkles, thus preventing new wrinkles from being generated.
When the effect of the substance wears off, the wrinkles that already existed reappear but in a much smoother way. One of the benefits of Botox is precisely that it delays the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
6. Botox will be painful and I hate needles.
Everyone’s pain threshold is different– but for most people the anticipation is far worse than any actual pain they experience. For first-timers a common reaction after this quick treatment is, “that was way easier than I thought it was going to be!” because the needle is so tiny some people really don’t feel it. For those who have a low pain tolerance though we offer ice to numb the area or a topical numbing for those who really do not want to feel a thing. We want all of our patients to feel the upmost comfort so that the next time they come in, any anxiety they may have felt the first time is completely at ease.
7. Botox will completely freeze my face.
Injecting Botox, or any aesthetic procedures for that matter, is not only a science but an artform. That is why at DermFx we only choose providers who have an extreme passion for health and medicine and a good eye for facial aesthetics. Most of our providers have 10+ years experience as aesthetic nurses and are constantly going through new training courses to keep their skills fresh and learn the latest techniques for injecting. It is true that an unqualified injectors could use too many units and therefore cause a “frozen” look, but we believe in a more natural looking approach here at DermFx.
At Dermfx all of the providers are RN’s, NP’s or PA’s who specialize in their field. DermFx is also one of the top providers in the country across the board for Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau along with all of the injectable fillers as well.
For your convenience, DermFx stays open 7 days a week and offers complimentary consultations.
